 Sparkman wins it late

Huntsville Times ArticleLayup at buzzer shocks Bob Jones
in area final, 40-39

MADISON - Joyce Kenon had never experienced the state's premier girls basketball rivalry until she enrolled at Sparkman last summer and became a part of the Lady Senators' program. Fourth-ranked Sparkman and second-ranked Bob Jones played yet another classic Saturday night in the Class 6A, Area 15 championship game. And no one had a bigger role in determining the outcome than Kenon, a 5-foot-10 reserve. Kenon tossed in a layup off an in-bounds play as time expired to lift the Lady Senators to a stunning 40-39 victory on the Lady Patriots' home floor. Sparkman (23-6) overcame a six-point deficit in the final 39 seconds to snap Bob Jones' 23-game winning streak. Kenon had kept Sparkman's hopes alive with a 3-pointer with 8.2 seconds remaining. After Bob Jones turned the ball over attempting to throw it in, the Lady Senators got possession underneath their own basket. Bob Jones (29-2) - which had fouls to spare - immediately committed one on 6-foot-1 center Jasmine Jones with 1.8 seconds left. Unable to lob the ball into Jones again, it instead came to Kenon, who streaked across the lane from outside the free-throw line and went up with the layup as the horn sounded. While Sparkman celebrated, Bob Jones coach Tim Miller sought an explanation from the three-man officiating crew as to whether Kenon had released the shot with time on the clock. One official near mid-court appeared to wave it off before all three left the court. Moments later the lead referee emerged to rule that the shot indeed counted and the Lady Senators' celebration resumed. "It was not supposed to come to me," Kenon said, "but I saw the opening so I figured 'Why don't I just hit the open area.' " "We knew they'd put two or three on J.J. (Jones)," said Sparkman coach June Seals. "This kid (Kenon) has hit unbelievable layups. She has an unorthodox shot so I put her on the other side knowing that they've got to cover (Sharin) Rivers. "When she got it she flipped it up. But she shoots 'em that way all the time." How long had it been since Bob Jones lost? To put it in perspective, Tim Tebow was quarterback of the nation's No. 1-ranked college football team and U.S. Rep. Parker Griffith was still a Democrat when the Lady Patriots fell to No. 1 Hoover back in November. A 12-0 fourth-quarter run pushed the Lady Patriots' lead to 36-28 with 1:12 remaining, but they failed to put the game away from the free-throw line, missing five down the stretch. Rivers' 3-pointer made it 38-35 with 27.5 seconds to go. A free throw by Shelly Lambert gave Bob Jones a 39-35 lead with 23 seconds left, but Kenon scored her only five points of the game in the final seconds to hand Sparkman its first win in three tries against the Lady Patriots. Bob Jones travels to Area 16 champion Buckhorn for next week's sub-regional play. Sparkman hosts Area 15 runner-up Hazel Green. Jones led Sparkman with 11 points and Alexis Butler added 10.  Bob Jones delivers defensive dandy in victory

Huntsville Times ArticleMADISON - Stingy.
That's what host Bob Jones High was Thursday night against Austin in the semi-finals of the Class 6A, Area 15 girls basketball tournament. The second-ranked Lady Patriots (29-1) allowed only nine baskets - one in the first quarter, two in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth - in a 54-26 victory over the Lady Black Bears (12-14). "Defense has always been our trademark," said Bob Jones coach Tim Miller, who celebrated his 300th career win. "We did a good job of pressuring the ball tonight." Almost everybody scored for the Lady Patriots (seven in the first quarter alone), who fell behind 2-0 and then proceeded to go on a 15-0 run. Sophomore Tierra Jones, with 14 points, was the only one to reach double-figure scoring. "We've been that way all year long. It doesn't matter who does the scoring for us," Miller said. "We get production out of everybody. We like that balance." Bob Jones plays Sparkman at 7 p.m. Saturday for the title. Bill Bryant, Huntsville Times staff report

 Lady Patriots take charge

Huntsville Times ArticleNo. 2 Bob Jones tops Grissom 51-19. Bob Jones coach Tim Miller moved one game closer to career win No. 300 as the Class 6A, second-ranked Lady Patriots broke open a tight game in the second half to defeat Grissom 51-19 Tuesday night. Tierra Jones scored 14 points to lead Bob Jones (28-1). The Lady Patriots led 14-7 at the half, then eased away to a 30-16 lead entering the fourth quarter. "We played with them for three quarters, then couldn't make a shot,'' Lady Tigers coach Guy Collins said. Natalie Farmer had seven points to lead Grissom (9-15). MeKena Randle added 12 for Bob Jones (27-1) which Friday plays at Lee before traveling Saturday to take on top-ranked Hoover. The Lady Bucs defeated Bob Jones 41-35 in December. "We would like to execute better than the last time we played them,'' Miller said. "You go into each game looking for more consistency on each end, and going into a game with this type of competition, if we don't we'll get beat pretty good.'' Grissom will play host to Columbia on Friday. Mike Easterling,Wednesday, January 27, 2010, From staff reports,

 Bob Jones Still Rolling

Huntsville Times Article
Lady Patriots fine with busy schedule, top Buckhorn 47-30
MADISON - The Bob Jones High girls played their fourth basketball game in five days Tuesday night. But the Lady Patriots attacked Buckhorn with the zeal of a season opener in a battle of Top 10 teams. Mekena Randle scored 10 points to lead the way as Bob Jones, ranked second on Class 6A, defeated the ninth-ranked Lady Bucks 47-30. "The more reps we get the better we'll get, "Randle said as she iced a fractured wrist. She added it only hurts when it "gets hit." Bob Jones improved to 25-1 -- its lone loss was to top-ranked Hoover in the seventh game of the season - while Buckhorn dropped to 14-7. "We didn't show up to play," Lady Bucks guard Krishayle Evans said. "When we played scared, we'll get beat by whatever the score was or worse." The Lady Patriots take on Muscle Shoals on Thursday and meet Florence on Friday. The Lady Bucks next play at home against Area 16 foe and archival Hazel Green. Buckhorn can clinch homecourt for the area tournament with a win, while a Lady Trojans victory would force a tie. "We're trying to avoid a coin toss," Lady Bucks coach Anthony Bell said. Tuesday night, Buckhorn couldn't avoid another loss to the Lady Patriots. Buckhorn lost to Bob Jones for the second time this season and hasn't defeated its former county rival since the 2001-02 season. However, the two teams haven't played each season since. Things began well enough for the Lady Bucks, who led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter. But Bob Jones moved ahead in the second and was in control at the half 26-15. The Lady Patriots led by as much as 15 points in the third quarter, took a 36-26 lead into the fourth and the closest the Lady Bucks got the rest of the way was 40-30 with 2:47 left. According to Bob Jones coach Tim Miller, the busy game schedule has been good for his team. "You want to work on your stuff against somebody else," he said. "Your still finding out what will work, what doesn't work. And the kids like it better." Rikeyah McKinnon said the Lady Patriots continue to be a work in progress as they gear up to host the area tournament beginning Feb. 5. "I feel like we've gotten a lot better since December," she said. "But, we've got a long way to go." Jacquelyn Lambert led Buckhorn with 10 points.

Birmingham News Article

Class 6A second-ranked Bob Jones used a 10-0 run to start the second quarter to build a 25-8 lead on the way to an easy victory in Martin Luther King Day girls basketball at Samford.

The two-time defending class champion Patriots (24-1) kept the Mounties (17-6) at bay with tight man-to-man defense and were able to get plenty of easy baskets inside.

"Anytime someone is that aggressive with us we have trouble handling it," said Shades Valley coach Tonya Hunter. "They play really good defense. It's the best defense we've faced this year."

The Patriots started quickly with an 8-0 run keyed by a pair of baskets from senior 5-foot-5 point guard Tiarra Pritchett, who finished with eight points in the balanced attack. Tierra Jones led Bob Jones with 12 points off the bench while Shelby Lambert nailed three 3-pointers for nine points and Rikeyah McKinnon added nine points.

Morganne Phillips and Ashlee McAdory each scored 13 points to lead the Mounties. Birmingham News - Dennis Victory, January 18, 2010 8:31 p.m.

Bob Jones girls clinch area title vs. Sparkman

Huntsville Times Article

HARVEST - It was vintage Bob Jones vs. Sparkman girls. At least in effort and drama. The Lady Patriots, ranked second in Class 6A, were held to 10 baskets but held the fourth-ranked Lady Senators to 12 and clinched the Area 15 championship with a 30-26 victory Saturday. "It's not a sprint but a marathon every time you play Sparkman,'' Bob Jones coach Tim Miller said. "I think we defended well, and they do some things to us that caused the score to be low.'' Tiarra Pritchett was high-scorer for Bob Jones (23-1 overall, 5-1 area) with nine points. "We missed a lot of easy shots, open baskets,'' she said. There was an echo in the locker room at the other end of the gym. "We missed wide-open shots,'' Sparkman coach June Seals said. "My kids do not handle the pressure well right now. They play their guts out, but they've got to get a basketball mentality. They have to learn to finish shots.'' Sparkman (17-6, 2-3) was led by Jasmine Jones' 11 points and seven rebounds. Bob Jones sank 8-of-15 free throws while the Lady Senators sank just 1-of-6. Sunday, January 17, 2010, By Mike Easterling, Times Sports Writer mike.easterling@htimes.com

Top lineup set for 26th Classic

Decatur Daily
6A champ Bob Jones seen as Decatur Orthopaedic Clinic favorite

If you love high school basketball, next week is one of the most wonderful times of the year. Local girls basketball fans don’t have to travel far from the comforts of home to enjoy great competition in one of the longest-standing girls tournaments in the state when the 26th annual Decatur Orthopaedic Clinic Classic begins Monday at Decatur High. The three-day tournament will feature eight games Monday, followed by eight games both Tuesday and Wednesday in Earl Morris Gymnasium. The finals are set for Wednesday at 8 p.m. “I think the big thing this year is that we have a field where half of the teams in it could win the tournament. At least half of the field could win it and it not be a surprise.” While defending tournament champion and two-time defending Class 6A state champion Bob Jones is the favorite, the Lady Patriots will be challenged by several other teams in this year’s field. This year’s field includes two state-ranked teams — 6A No. 2 Bob Jones and 2A No. 8 Tanner — while four others have been in the rankings at some point this season. Local teams fared well in last year’s tournament. Sparkman beat Decatur 61-33 in last year’s championship game. Clay-Chalkville finished third in the tournament last year, beating Austin in the consolation finals. Two local teams square off on the first day when 6A Austin meets 4A Priceville at 6:30 p.m. Boy expects it to be one of the most hotly contested games of the day. “Priceville is in for the first time and we’re excited to have them,” Boy said. “I look forward to seeing that (Austin vs. Priceville) game for sure.” Two more teams added from last year are regular Northwest Regional qualifier 6A Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa along with 5A Fairfield, now coached by Tiffany Frederick, who played in the tournament during her prep days. “Those two coming in really beef up this field,” Boy said. “I think we’ve got a nice flavor for some different kinds of basketball.” For the host team, Boy said it’s a chance “to get back on track,” after going 1-2 recently in the Huntsville Times Ladies Classic. Decatur’s girls earned a No. 9 state ranking earlier in the season. “We had a very disappointing Huntsville Times Classic. There’s no secret in that and we’re not going to hide from that,” Boy said. “We need to use this tournament to build momentum for the second half of the season.” Tournament admission for each day will be $5.  Lady Pats filled with super subs

Huntsville Times ArticleMADISON - Not long after the Bob Jones High girls had taken a one-point second-quarter lead in what to that point had been a back-and-forth affair with Hazel Green, five players dressed in home white trotted from the bench and squatted at the scorer's table. Lady Patriots coach Tim Miller wasn't subbing 5-for-5 for motivational purposes during Wednesday's championship game of The Huntsville Times Classic. He was doing it because he could do it. "Oh yeah, it's by design," he said. About four minutes later, when the halftime buzzer sounded, Class 6A's second-ranked team and two-time defending champion headed to the locker room with a 15-point advantage. Bob Jones went on to claim a 62-40 victory for its third straight Huntsville Times Classic title at its home gym. "We have so many people that we can put in," said 5-foot-8 sophomore forward Katie Colson, who had nine points off the bench for the Lady Patriots. "We all get playing time, and any one of us can step up." Much has been made about Miller having to replace the five starters from the juggernaut that rolled through the past couple of Februarys. All of them signed Division I scholarships. While the individual talent might not be as strong, collectively the Lady Patriots are doing just fine. Eight different players scored in the first half against the Lady Trojans, which fit right in with Miller's plan. "This being our fourth game in three days, and playing a transition team like them, I told everybody they would get an opportunity to play," Miller said. "We like to push it, too. Sometimes, it just depends on the style of play we're facing." In this particular case, the style was physical from the tip. Bodies flopped. Hips were checked. Tempers were occasionally on the cusp of being flared. By early in the second half, Miller and his counterpart Chad Hall were effectively in time out. Each of them had been assessed technical fouls. For a first meeting - which this was - it sure had the look of a February postseason game after several previous engagements.  "I feel like most teams get up to play Bob Jones," Miller said. "Everybody wants to beat us, and the girls on this team are beginning to see that on a daily basis." For the first 12 or so minutes, Hazel Green had its nose right in there, but it eventually had its impressive tournament run stopped for a variety of reasons. The Lady Trojans had a difficult time rebounding and defending, leading Hall to say afterward that the officials "took the game out of our hands." But the first-year coach was also quick to point out "their bench took the lead and stretched it out," which effectively put Hazel Green's hopes of an upset to rest. "They play hard, without a doubt," Hall said of the Lady Patriots. "We want our program to be where Bob Jones is." It has to be happy where it is right now, with 14 victories and just one loss. "We're just having a lot of fun," Colson said, "and we're all playing together." If nothing else, these Lady Patriots have answered any questions about how they were going to replace all of that departed talent. It's apparent they are capable of building a legacy of their own. It's still early, of course. And pulling it off won't be easy. But at least they have a lot of folks willing to lend a hand.  Hosts win it all

Huntsville Times ArticleMADISON - Shelby Lambert heard what her coach was saying. "During a timeout we were talking about what we need to do to score,'' the Bob Jones senior guard said. "He looked at me and said, 'You've got to knock some shots down.' '' Lambert listened and helped set off what proved to be a decisive run in the second half of the second quarter as the host Lady Patriots won their third straight championship at the ninth annual Huntsville Times Ladies Classic. The Wednesday afternoon crowd looked on as Bob Jones turned a tense one-point game into a comfortable halftime lead en route to a 62-40 win over Hazel Green. The game was ragged at times and both head coaches - Bob Jones' Tim Miller and the Lady Trojans' Chad Hall - were whistled for technical fouls. "Hazel Green is a transition, up-and-down team and we want to run too so we started playing (a lot of) kids,'' Miller said. "And it's fun when you hit some shots.'' Bob Jones, the second-ranked team and two-time defending Class 6A state champion, and 6A Hazel Green, which made a surprise run through the tournament into the finals, were locked in a heated battle through 1 1/2 quarters. But after the Lady Trojans trimmed a 16-12 deficit they were in at the start of the second period to 20-19 with 4:59 left, the Lady Patriots' perimeter players went to work. Lambert sank a 3-pointer, Tierra Jones scored underneath, Lambert made another trey and, after Katie Colson scored, Alexis Parkes made a 3-pointer to end a 13-0 run. With 1:01 until halftime, Bob Jones' lead swelled to 33-19 and it took a 36-31 lead into the third quarter. While Lambert and company were opening up the outside, the Bob Jones duo of Mekena Randle and Jones made it difficult on Hazel Green's post players. "Those two girls were hard,'' Hall said. "They were bigger, and that's our weakness. And when they've got a couple of players who can make shots outside, that makes it hard.'' Randle led Bob Jones (14-1) with 13 points and 12 rebounds. "You know what you'll get with us,'' Miller said. "We're going to Mekena and hope we get some shots from somebody else.'' Lambert said while the Lady Patriots have faith in their guards to score, the team's post players "were above the other teams we saw here.'' Chelsi Bryant paced Hazel Green (9-8) with 13 points. Bob Jones next plays Monday against Pinson Valley in Decatur High's Red River Classic. Hazel Green is entered in the Northwest Alabama Tournament at Lauderdale County beginning Saturday. Hall said the Classic should only make his first Hazel Green team better as it gears up for the second half. "Without a doubt,'' he said. "Nobody expected us to be in the finals.''  Patriots Beat Hazel Green to Claim 3rd Straight HSV Times Classic

Bob Jones High School

Final 2009 HSV Times Classic Brackets

The Bob Jones Lady Patriots held off the Hazel Green Lady Trojans 62-40 in a very physical game to capture their 3rd straight Huntsville Times Classic championship. The Lady Trojans remained close early with a series of long three point shots but slowed after senior Chelsie Bryant went down with an injury. Bob Jones was able to widen the gap in the second quarter reaching a 36-21 lead at half.

In the semi-final game against Madison Academy, it took overtime before the Lady Patriots were able to close the deal 39-37. Bob Jones finally seemed to get over their poor free throw shooting coming into the tourney with a very high percentage over the four games. Mekena Randle, Tiarra Pritchett and Shelby Lambert from the Lady Patriot squad all made the All-Tournament team.

Bob Jones girls hold off Madison Academy 39-37 in semifinal

MADISON - With the game on the line and its goal of a third straight tournament championship in doubt, the Bob Jones High girls basketball team turned to something that's been problematic throughout the season.

"I didn't want to get into a free-throw shooting contest with them, that's for sure,'' Lady Patriots coach Tim Miller said. "But we did shoot them better than we have all year.'' A semifinal game at the ninth annual The Huntsville Times Ladies Classic didn't turn into a free-throw-fest, but the Lady Patriots sank 6-of-7 for all of their points in overtime as they survived upset-minded Madison Academy with a thrilling 39-37 victory Tuesday. Senior Mekena Randle, who said Bob Jones has stressed getting better at the charity stripe, sank 4-of-4 in overtime. Her last two with 12 seconds remaining proved to be the difference after Madison Academy threw the ball out of bounds as time expired. Randle said the tense game was what tournament play is all about. "It won't be a surprise when it happens later on,'' she said after leading all scorers with 18 points. "It will mentally prepare us.'' Bob Jones (13-1), which is ranked second in Class 6A and has also won two straight state championships, plays tournament surprise Hazel Green (9-7) today at 3 p.m. for the title. The Lady Trojans advanced with a 62-55 semifinal win over Jeff Davis. "They're quick and athletic and have three or four players that can shoot,'' Miller said. "We'll have our hands full.'' Madison Academy (14-2), the top-ranked team in 3A whose both losses have been to Bob Jones, will play Jeff Davis (12-4) today at 1:30 p.m. for third place. "We can only get better from here,'' Madison Academy junior Nyla Johnson said after leading the Lady Mustangs with 17 points. Madison Academy jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but Bob Jones went ahead 9-7 when Randle scored as the clock ran out on the first quarter. The Lady Patriots held a 20-13 halftime lead and took a 26-23 advantage into the fourth quarter. The lead never got bigger than five points, and the Lady Mustangs tied it when Johnson hit a 3-pointer and teammate Amara Mayer followed with a basket to make it 33-all with 1:53 left in regulation. Madison Academy regained possession with 30 seconds left, and played for the last shot. It nearly paid off when Johnson, the team's leading scorer, had a short jump shot from near the side of the lane bounce off the rim as the clock wound down. "I thought it was in,'' Lady Mustangs coach Brian Privett said. Instead, the two teams played an extra period of intense hoops in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Bob Jones. "That was two good teams with good players,'' Miller said. "It was a good high school game to watch. I thought both teams battled.'' Privett agreed with Johnson's assessment that the team will get better despite the loss. "I was proud of the girls for playing through the adversity of facing a tough defensive team,'' he said. "We're both very good defensively. The thing is you can't simulate playing someone like them in practice.''  Lady Pats cruise

Huntsville Times ArticleMADISON - The host Bob Jones Lady Patriots were in control from the outset, but the team was not thrilled despite winning for the fifth straight game to open the first day of The Huntsville Times Ladies Classic. Bob Jones, ranked second in Class 6A and now 11-1 with its lone loss coming to top-ranked Hoover, easily advanced to the tournament quarterfinals with a 61-39 Monday night victory over Carver-Montgomery. Bob Jones will play Athens at 4:30 p.m. The winner advances to a 7:30 p.m. semifinal, while the loser will fall to a 9 p.m. game in the consolation round. "We didn't play like we should have,'' Lady Patriots junior Rikeya McKinnon said. "We started off slow. We should have come out harder and tougher than we did and that's disappointing.'' Sophomore Joidon Jennings said the Lady Patriots took Saturday off from practice and it showed. "We came back looking like a completely different team,'' she said. "We just weren't executing.'' Mekena Randle scored 17 points and Jennings and Tierra Jones both added 10 for Bob Jones, which led 18-7 after one quarter and 32-14 at halftime. Tiffany Kelley and Shatavia Ferris both had 12 points for Carver (5-3), which plays Grissom today at 1:30 p.m. Mike Easterling - Tuesday, December 22, 2009, From staff reports, Huntsville Times

No. 2 Bob Jones girls hold off fourth-ranked Sparkman at home
MADISON - Round 1 went to the Bob Jones High girls basketball team Friday night. The second-ranked Lady Patriots, after losing five starters from last year's 6A state championship team, beat No. 4 Sparkman 28-27. Bob Jones moved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in Area 15. After Bob Jones claimed a 7-4 first-quarter advantage, Sparkman (5-2, 0-1) took its first lead at the 6:28 mark of the second quarter. Sparkman outscored Bob Jones 13-4 in the second quarter to take the 17-11 halftime lead. "This week has been really frustrating for us after Monday's loss to Hoover," said Bob Jones' Mekena Randle. "So we had to show ourselves that we could get back up and play as a team. We are all leaders, and we all step up when we need to, and we never quit and we were not going to let them (Sparkman) come into our home and beat us." Bob Jones regained the lead for the first time since the first quarter with 5:23 to go in the game on a two free throws by DeAsha Campbell. Sparkman's Sharin Rivers gave the Lady Senators the lead again when she hit a 3-pointer basket. Randle later hit two layups to pull the Lady Patriots within 27-26. Rivers went to the foul line for a one-and-one and missed the shot, giving Bob Jones the opportunity to rebound. With eight seconds remaining, Randle hit a layup to put the Lady Patriots ahead 28-27 and seal the win. "It's always good to get a win, especially an area game, but we've still got a long way to go," Bob Jones coach Tim Miller said. Randle had 13 points for Bob Jones, while Campbell finished the night with eight. For Sparkman, Rivers has 14 points and Jasmine Jones had 10. From staff reports Huntsville Times

Lady Patriots' new look still a winner

Huntsville Times ArticleBob Jones girls are 6-1 so far with five new starters
MADISON - The starting lineup is entirely new, yet it features four seniors. That's the paradox facing the Bob Jones High girls basketball team, which is not as experienced as recent squads that won back-to-back Class 6A state championships. But while the Lady Patriots were expected to
be something of a puzzle early in the season, one thing has remained constant - they're still winning. This season's edition still plays clamp-down defense like its predecessors, just maybe more from baseline to baseline while relying more on the fastbreak. The new "go-go'' Lady Patriots (6-1) are ranked No. 2 with their only loss coming 41-35 to top-ranked Hoover. Another challenge awaits Friday when archrival and No. 4-ranked Sparkman visits. "Everybody thought it would be easy playing Bob Jones because we lost five starters and eight seniors," senior forward Mekena Randle said. Not just five starters - but five who signed Division I scholarships. Yet coach Tim Miller's cupboard wasn't left bare. Randle and fellow seniors Tiarra Pritchett, Shelby Lambert and Alisia Matthews all saw playing time in previous seasons. Two things highlight changes for Bob Jones this season. The team is shorter - Randle and Matthews are the team's tallest players at 5-foot-9 - though the Lady Patriots also have more overall quickness to offset the lack of height. The faster tempo didn't work against the Lady Buccaneers earlier this week, but the outcome was in doubt until the final minutes. "That shows you his ability to coach, to transform the program," said Hoover coach Donnie Quick, whose team finished runner-up to Bob Jones last season and features three players over 6-foot. Miller bemoaned his team's lack of a go-to player in the loss to Hoover, which rode stars Tyrese Tanner and Meghan Dunn down the stretch. Bob Jones sank just 1-of-12 3-pointers in the loss, allowing the Lady Bucs to sit back in zone defense. "I want our girls to shoot with pressure on and have confidence," Miller said. "Unless we do that, teams are going to (zone) us." Bob Jones also sank just 4-of-16 free throws in that game. "We've got to find somebody we can go-to," Miller said. "We have to have some body step up." The current Lady Patriots said they learned a few things from past players. "Always play hard and work together," Pritchett said. Matthews said this year's bunch does just that, working "just as hard" as any team in previous seasons. Though the team is running more during practice to accommodate the uptempo offense, Randle said one thing hasn't changed. "We're going to hang our hat on defense,'' she said.  No. 1 sinks No. 2

Huntsville Times ArticleBob Jones High girls can't match up with Hoover in 41-35 loss
MADISON - It was anything but easy, but one season after being turned back by Bob Jones High time and again the Hoover Lady Buccaneers finally tasted success against the Lady Patriots in a clash of unbeaten girls basketball teams. Hoover had to overcome a 12-0 Bob Jones run in the first half, as well as early foul trouble to Auburn-bound Tyrese Tanner, but did both in claiming a grinding 41-35 victory Monday night. The Lady Bucs came in ranked No. 1 in Class 6A with the two-time defending state champion Lady Patriots at No. 2. Bob Jones defeated Hoover
three times in three meetings last season, including 56-43 in the state title game, but had to replace five starters. "I wouldn't say we underestimated them,'' said Tanner, a 6-foot-1 guard/forward. "We had to stick with our defense and stay out of foul trouble. Hoover (6-0) was whistled for 17 fouls, while Bob Jones (6-1) had 15. "It was a tough game,'' Lady Bucs coach Donnie Quinn said. "Defensively, they're aggressive and it's hard to get a lot of good looks. I credit both defenses. That's why it was a low-scoring game.'' While Hoover sometimes has three 6-1 players in the lineup, Bob Jones has no player over 5-9. The Lady Patriots sank only 1-of-12 3-pointers and 4-of-16 free throws. The Lady Bucs were 5-of-8 at the free-throw line, all in the final 1:15. "I want to be in these situations at this time of the season,'' Lady Patriots coach Tim Miller said. "You can't simulate a game like this in practice. When you've got the uniforms on and people are in the stands is when you have to execute. "And I also can't simulate their height.'' Hoover (6-0) scored the game's first five points but Bob Jones (6-1), behind its fast-paced attack, scored the next 12 to end the quarter. Tanner was on the bench with two fouls during much of the run. Bob Jones clung to a 17-13 lead at halftime, but when Tanner entered to start the second half she immediately had an impact. She scored eight of her 12 points in the third quarter and teammate Shannon Steinart sank a 3-pointer to put Hoover ahead for good at 20-19 with 3:23 left in the period. The Lady Bucks led by as much as five and settled for a 29-25 advantage heading into the fourth. Bob Jones got to within two points at 29-27, but Hoover scored six straight points with five coming on a 3-pointer and basket by guard Megan Dunn. The lead never slipped below four points in the final 5:47. Dunn scored a game-high 13 points with eight coming in the fourth quarter. "Tanner and Dunn, they're going to them in crunch time and we knew that,'' Miller said. "We've got to have somebody step up. We played hard, we just struggled scoring.'' Randall, who along with fellow senior forward Alisia Matthews are the team's tallest players at 5-9, was the lone Lady Patriots player in double figures with 10 points. Despite the disappointment of the season's first loss, Randall said the setback would help the team. "It already did,'' she said. "We now know what we've got to work on.''  Lady Patriots beat Grissom to go 5-0

Huntsville Times Article

MADISON - New look, same result. At least that's the way it's been so far for the Bob Jones Lady Patriots basketball team, which had to replace five starters from a squad that won the last two Class 6A state championships. Five games into the season the re-tooled Lady Patriots are once again humming along, staying undefeated with a 78-40 Thursday night home victory over Grissom. Bob Jones (5-0) not only has a brand new starting lineup, senior Mekena Randle said the team is " a lot quicker." The Lady Patriots used that quickness to harass the Lady Tigers for four quarters, stretching a 42-29 halftime lead to an insurmountable 60-34 margin in the third quarter. Grissom scored twice to close out the third to make it 60-38 entering the fourth, then didn't score against the suffocating Bob Jones pressure until the 2:14 mark of the final period. Coach Tim Miller said the Lady Patriots - who don't have the size they've enjoyed during the recent years - will still play a halfcourt game when called for, but also won't put a bridle on the team. "We're just trying to find something that fits the players," Miller said. "We're trying to utilize our quickness." Bob Jones isn't entirely young with Randle among four seniors and one junior currently starting. But, she said, the Lady Patriots have something to prove in the wake of the heavy graduation losses. "That's what we've said from the beginning," said Randle, whose 24 points led the win. Alisia Matthews had 17 points and Tierra Jones added 11 for Bob Jones. Elizabeth Seaford scored 14 points for Grissom (1-1) which was coming off a season-opening win over Johnson on Tuesday. Mike Easterling

Senior Guard Shelby Lambert represents her class at Homecoming

Bob Jones High School
The Bob Jones Basketball program was represented well at this year's homecoming when senior guard Shelby Lambert was chosen as a senior attendant. Last year BJHS player, Autumn Azizian was also chosen as a junior attendant.  Congratulations to both girls. Bob Jones actually lost the non-region game to Homewood go 5-1 on the season but made an unbelievable comeback from 11 points down with only 1:45 left in the game to take the lead with 25 seconds left. Homewood pulled the hook and ladder pass play to get to the Bob Jones 11 yard line with only 4 seconds left to play. Homewood completed a perfect low pass to a receiver in the end zone for the final play. Final score was Homewood 37 - Bob Jones 35.
