Bob Jones Lady Patriots take 1st Place at Florida State Team Camp
The Bob Jones High School Lady Patriots won their first three basketball games at the Seminole Extreme Team Camp. They beat Pope High School from Marietta, Georgia in the first game by 11 points even though they were a little bit out of sync but played much better in the second game against Clark Central from Athens, Georgia. Bob Jones locked down the No. 1 Seed in the Gold "A" Pool by beating Choctaw Wednesday morning by more than 20 points. The Lady Patriots played Pope High School again in a scrimmage early that afternoon and played great.
In Tournament Play Wednesday afternoon at 3:00pm, the Lady Patriots blew out the 4th place Eufaula team from Gold Pool B by over 30 points then beat Pope High School again to advance to the Finals. In the title Game, the Lady Patriots came back to win by 12 after a 0-10 start against Clark Central and down 8 points at halftime to claim the Team Camp Gold Division Championship! The girls celebrated by going swimming at the wave pool then on to the Motel with room doors on the inside! At Jeff Davis High School on Friday, the Lady Pats beat Selma by around 15 points, beat the host team Jeff Davis by 20 points, then finished their long road trip undefeated with a win against an AAU team.

Minnesota Gophers sign ex-BJHS PG to National Letter of Intent
Minnesota head coach Pam Borton announced that China Antoine from Shelton State
Community College (Ala.) has signed a National Letter of Intent. Antoine, a 5-3
point guard, will join the Golden Gopher as a junior in the 2009-10
season. “We are excited to have China join our program,” said Borton. “A
point guard and leader, China is a proven winner and her teams have won a lot!
Coming from a program that is used to winning is something we look for in
recruiting student-athletes to our program. China is a great fit for our program
and we are excited to welcome her into our Gopher family.” Antoine helped
the Lady Bucs to NCJAA National Tournament appearances in both 2008 and 2009.
Shelton State finished sixth in the tournament last season, posting a 38-6
overall record. The 2008 squad placed seventh and collected a 31-5 record.
Shelton State captured Alabama Community College Conference titles (ACCC) in
both seasons. Antoine finished the 2008-09 season among the NJCAA leaders
in assists and steals. She dished out 6.9 assists per game to rank fourth in the
nation, while her 3.2 steals per game ranked 21st. During the season, Antoine
earned All-ACCC Second Team honors and went on to collect MVP accord at both the
conference and regional tournaments. Antoine is from Madison, Ala., and
was a 2007 graduate of Bob Jones High School.

Huntsville players win Mr. and Miss Basketball awards
Madison Academy senior point guard Kerron Johnson hopes
outsiders will look at his winning the Alabama Sports
Writers Association's Mr. Basketball award Thursday and
draw a conclusion on the level of talent in the state. When national scouts and college coaches see top recruits
DeMarcus Cousins of LeFlore and Eric Bledsoe of Parker lost
out to the Class 3A boys player of the year, Johnson hopes
the state of Alabama will earn a little more respect on the
hoops map. "People look at Alabama as a football state,"
Johnson said, "but we showed we could play basketball
too." Perhaps the best basketball was played in Huntsville,
which is home to both the Mr. Basketball and Miss Basketball
in 2009. Bob Jones senior point guard Jala Harris captured
the Miss Basketball crown. Harris said she wasn't surprised that both players of
the year were from the Rocket City. "We've got some good basketball players in the
Huntsville area," Harris said. Johnson led Madison Academy to three Class 3A
championships during his varsity career...Friday, April 03, 2009, WESLEY HALLMAN, News staff writer

Jala Harris Leads All-State Team as "Player of the Year"
Hard-working Harris
Harris' summers were all about basketball, too, usually with several of her
Bob Jones' teammates. All of that time together certainly helped develop team
chemistry, evidenced by the Lady Patriots' back-to-back 6A state titles. The five-year starter played a pivotal role, of course. This past season she
averaged 16.2 points, eight assists and three steals per game. "There's no doubt she's the best point guard in the state," Bob Jones coach
Tim Miller said. "She just makes everybody better. To put the ball in her hands
is to know something good is going to happen." As is typical of a true point guard, the UAB signee passed along praise to
her fellow Lady Patriots. "It's a great honor," she said. "I couldn't have done it without my
teammates. We've been playing together since we were 12, so it's something I can
share with them."
Other All-State picks
Harris shares first-team 6A all-state honors with teammate Kellie Cook, as
well as Adrienne Webb of rival Sparkman. Bob Jones' Sametria Gideon made the 2nd team squad.

Bob Jones guard leads team to 2nd straight 6A girls basketball title
Bob Jones senior point guard Jala Harris proved to everyone in attendance at
Saturday's AHSAA Class 6A girls championship game what her coach, Tim Miller,
already knew. Harris cemented her candidacy for the Alabama Sports Writers Association's
Miss Basketball award with a 21-point, five-assist performance as she led No. 2
Bob Jones to its second straight 6A girls title with a 56-43 win over No. 3
Hoover at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex Arena. "In my mind, she's the best girls basketball player in the state," Miller
said. "She's a prime-time player." Sametria Gideon added 14 points and seven rebounds. Twin sisters Kylie and
Kellie Cook each played a big part for the Patriots (33-3) with 10 and seven
points, respectively. K.T. Garrett led Hoover (30-6) with 13 points and six rebounds. Jazmine
Martin added 12 points. After a hot start by Hoover, Harris gave the Bucs trouble with her ability to
drive in the lane and find open post players for easy baskets. The Patriots
erased an early six-point deficit with a 16-6 run. Harris scored four points
late in the second quarter to help Bob Jones take a 26-22 lead into the locker
room at halftime. "Coach told us to keep attacking the basket," Bob Jones' Harris said. "We
were able to get that done." Hoover coach Donnie Quinn said Harris' ability to penetrate caused matchup
problems for his team. "I thought she did a great job," Quinn said. "Once she gets into the lane,
everything breaks down." Harris scored nine of her 21 points in the second half. After Hoover cut the
lead to 37-33 following a 3-pointer by Martin late in the third quarter, Kellie
Cook answered with a 3-pointer and the Bucs had trouble creating any momentum
the rest of the way. Cook spent as much energy celebrating the Patriots' second championship as
she did on the court during the game. Cook jumped up and down in the final
minutes, was the first to greet teammates coming off the floor, encouraged the
crowd to cheer the Patriots on and skipped down the court after shaking hands
with Hoover's players after the game. "(Kellie) is so intense," Miller said. "She's one of those thinkers and she's
always analyzing things." Quinn said his team gave its best shot, but was simply outmatched by a better
opponent. "It didn't have anything to do with a lack of effort," Quinn said. Garrett said she thought the Bucs could have done better forcing their tempo
on the Patriots. "We're a much faster team than they are," Garrett said. "We didn't play our
best game." Sunday, March 01, 2009, WESLEY HALLMAN, News staff writer

Best of Final 48
BEST 3-POINT SHOOTING: The best 3-point shooting came during the Class 6A girls
final between Hoover and Bob Jones. Hoover started the game by hitting its first
three 3-point attempts to take an early lead. Bob Jones finished the game with
the upper hand after hitting 5 of 8 beyond the arc, including a perfect 3 of 3
by Kylie Cook.
BEST BODY PAINT: For style and substance it always goes to Bob Jones. The
fellows in the front row spelled out "CLEANSWEEP" when facing the front, in
reference to the boys and girls teams in the Class 6A finals. The nice touch
came during the announcement of the starting lineups when the 10 guys turned

Bob Jones seniors like championship sendoff

BIRMINGHAM - Bob Jones coach Tim Miller pulled his starters one by one near
the end, allowing all five seniors to enjoy a rousing ovation from the cheering
section. Coaches and players slapped hands, hugged and even chest-bumped to punctuate
the day as the winningest team in Lady Patriots' history played its final game
together. Then the horn sounded on a 56-43 win over Hoover in the Class 6A state
championship game at the Birmingham- Jefferson Convention Complex. "I don't know if I'll ever have another group of girls like this again,"
Miller said. "I'm in awe." Point guard Jala Harris, twin shooting guards Kellie and Kylie Cook and
forwards Jazmine Green and Sametria Gideon capped their brilliant careers with
the team's second straight state title. "It's my senior year, and to win the one you're leaving with is a great
feeling," Harris said. For Bob Jones (33-3), a repeat crown was the do-or-die mission. "Anything
less would have been a disappointment," Kellie Cook said. Garrett had 13 points and Martin 12 for Hoover (30-6), which lost to Bob
Jones for the third time in as many tries this season. Hoover sank its first five shots in surging to an 11-5 lead. The hot start
was keyed by two 3-pointers from Jazmine Martin and one by Karneisha Garrett.
The Lady Buccaneers led 16-11 at the end of the first quarter. "We knew they couldn't keep shooting perfect all game," Kylie Cook said. According to Harris, who had 21 points and five assists and was named
tournament MVP, Miller instructed the Lady Patriots to "keep attacking the
basket.'' They did, and when Gideon sank a layup and then a free throw to complete a
3-point play Bob Jones had its first lead at 19-18 with 4:48 remaining in the
first half. Hoover moved back out front, but after Harris turned a steal into a layup the
Lady Patriots led for good at 23-22 with 2:09 left until intermission. Bob Jones led 26-22 at halftime, then used a 6-2 run to open the third
quarter. The cushion was 41-33 entering the fourth quarter and never slipped before
seven points after that. "We weathered the storm at the beginning," Kellie Cook said. Gideon added 14 points and also had a team-high seven rebounds for Bob Jones.
Kylie Cook sank all three 3-pointers she tried and finished with 10 points. "I don't think it had anything to do with a lack of effort," Hoover coach
Donnie Quinn said. While Bob Jones' seniors will savor their latest victory for a lifetime,
Miller said he'll begin working on rebuilding the team soon. "I'll start thinking about it next week," he said. Sunday, March 01, 2009, By MIKE EASTERLING, Times Sports Staff mike.easterling@htimes.com

Bob Jones 47, Davidson 30
Bob Jones coach Tim Miller wasn't pleased with his team's play, but
he has to be happy about the second-ranked Patriots playing for a
second-consecutive AHSAA Class 6A girls title following Thursday's win
over No. 4 Davidson at the BJCC Arena. "This probably wasn't our best performance," Miller said. "But at this stage of the game, any win is a good win." The
Patriots hit just 1-of-9 attempts from 3-point range in the game and
were outrebounded 17-15 in the first half by a smaller Davidson lineup. Kellie
Cook led Bob Jones (32-3) with 15 points. Sametria Gideon added eight
points and 12 rebounds. Jala Harris finished with six points and 10
assists. Portia Kirksey led Davidson with 11 points. Sheanice Rhoden added nine points... Birmingham News - - Wesley Hallman, February 26, 2009 10:35 a.m.

Kellie Cook nails a 3-pointer from the right wing to give Bob Jones a 15-6 lead early in the second quarter. Portia Kirksey hits back-to-back 3-pointers, including one from 30-feet
out at the top of the key, to help Davidson cut the lead to 19-12. Portia Kirksey is doing her best to keep the Warriors in
the game as her eighth-consecutive point cut the lead to 21-14 late in
the second quarter. Bob Jones heads into the locker room at halftime with a 23-14 lead. Here's a stat sticking out on the halftime box score - Bob Jones' Jala
Harris has seven assists on the Patriots' 11 field goals in the first
16 minutes. Jasmine Green is an eraser on the defensive end for Bob Jones.
Green recorded a rejection on two consecutive trips down the floor and
hit two free throws to extend the Patriots' lead to 27-14 early in the
second half. Bob Jones starts to run away with it as Kellie Cook hits a basket and a free throw to push the lead to 30-14. Jala Harris pushes the Bob Jones lead to 33-16 with two free throws at the 4:15 mark in the third quarter. Sheanice Rhoden banks in a 3-pointer from the right wing to cut the Bob Jones lead to 40-23 at the end of the third quarter. Jala Harris hits two free throws to push the Patriots' lead to 46-27 midway through the fourth quarter. Defending Class 6A champion Bob Jones is headed back to the championship game with a 47-30 win over Davidson.

Patriots rarely harried with Harris at point

Senior point guard eager for semifinal game
Wednesday, February 25, 2009, By MIKE EASTERLING, Times Sports Staff mike.easterling@htimes.com
MADISON - Coach Tim Miller shook his head when asked about
Jala Harris. The question, he suggested, shouldn't be what the
senior point guard does for the Bob Jones High girls
basketball team but about what she doesn't bring to the
table. "It's a comfort zone as a head coach when you can
put the ball in Jala Harris' hands,'' he
said. "You feel good because you know something good is
going to happen.'' Harris is in her fifth season starting with the controls of
the Lady Patriots' offense under her guidance. So far,
all Bob Jones has to show for it is five straight regional
appearances, three berths in the final four and one state
championship. Harris and the senior-heavy Lady Patriots (31-3) return to
Birmingham for the Final 48 seeking defense of their Class
6A title beginning Thursday. They'll play Davidson
(31-4) at 9 a.m. in a semifinal game with the winner taking
on Hoover (29-5) or Smiths Station (29-4) at 1 p.m.
Saturday. Harris said she'll do what it takes to help the Lady
Patriots bag the school's second crown. "Passing, finding the open man, as a point guard
displaying leadership skills,'' she said. "If
the teams needs me to score I try to do that.'' With a balanced attack that features five senior starters,
Harris isn't always called upon to score. But as she
said, she will if necessary. In a 71-39 regional semifinal win over Minor, she sank five
3-pointers in the first half and finished with 24 points on
8-of-10 shooting from the field. She then had 19 points in the final as the Lady Patriots
defeated Sparkman 38-26. She's joined in the starting lineup by Kellie Cook and
her twin sister Kylie, who both have signed with Tennessee
Tech. There's also post players Sametria Gideon, a
Kennesaw State signee, and Jazmine Green who will join
Harris at UAB. They all fill different roles, but All-State performer
Kellie Cook said, "We've got to have (Harris). It
all starts with her.'' Added Gideon, who helped hold Sparkman All-State player and
LSU signee Adrianne Webb to two points in the regional
final, "She's a floor general.'' According to Miller, the team met about three months ago and
"aired some things out'' after he told the
players he didn't think they were playing and
practicing like a veteran team anxious to defend its state
championship. "Since that day they've been focused,''
he said. And with Harris, Kellie Cook and Gideon providing most of
the vocal leadership, Miller has sat back and enjoyed the
ride back to the Birmingham. With the game against Sparkman tied at 17-all heading into
the third quarter, Miller said, "I didn't have to
say anything at halftime. They were doing it. They've
been there and done that.'' Harris certainly has. As an eighth-grader, Bob Jones was
regional champion and lost to Davidson in the semifinals. As
a freshman, the Lady Patriots lost to Sparkman in the
regional final. She injured an ACL in her knee as a
sophomore at Christmas and missed the rest of the season
that ended with another loss to Sparkman in the regional
final. Last year, Bob Jones broke through with its first state
championship. Harris wants more. "I think we've realized this is our senior year,
this is it,'' she said. "This is your last
chance to leave your mark. You don't want to go out a
loser.''

Bob Jones girls top Sparkman again in regional final

Sunday, February 22, 2009, By BILL BRYANT
Times Sports Staff bill.bryant@htimes.com
HANCEVILLE - The Bob Jones High girls basketball team
didn't hit the magic number Saturday morning. Having Sparkman's number when it matters most, though,
will suffice. For the second year in a row, the Lady Patriots ended the
Lady Senators' season in the Class 6A Northwest
Regional final, winning 38-26 at Wallace State's Tom
Drake Coliseum. "We've played them seven times since I've
been here, and the first team that gets to 40 points wins
every time," said Lady Patriots coach Tim Miller, whose
team improved to 31-3 and will play Davidson (32-4) on
Thursday at next week's state tournament in Birmingham. "We didn't get there, but they didn't
either." In what qualified as a significant run in a physical,
in-your-jersey-on-both-ends affair, the defending state
champions scored six quick points early in the fourth
quarter, then made 6-of-7 free throws down the stretch to
earn a season split of their four games with top-ranked
Sparkman (31-2). "Last year, we had to get by Sparkman to get over the
hump," forward Kellie Cook said of Bob Jones'
neighborhood rival. "We knew all season it was going to
be the same thing this year. It was intense." Intense? There were almost as many free throws shot (40) as
there were field goals attempted (47). There were almost
twice as many free throws made (28) as field goals made
(15). An argument could be made that this was the de facto state
championship game, and at different times Saturday morning,
both teams played as if they were being asked to pump the
tires on the buses headed for Birmingham. "At halftime, I just told everyone 'We've got
to keep cool,' " said Lady Patriots point guard
Jala Harris, the regional MVP who scored 19 points and
handed out four assists against the Lady Senators. "They didn't take us out of it as much as we took
ourselves out of it," Lady Senators coach June Seals
said. "I couldn't get my team to settle in." Adrienne Webb certainly couldn't get comfortable. The
Sparkman star scored only two points in her last high school
game. "Shots just weren't falling for me," a
subdued Webb said afterward. They were at a premium for her, too. Bob Jones'
Sametria Gideon shadowed the LSU signee and allowed her
only seven attempts. "I've played against her so many times, I pretty
much knew what she was going to do," Gideon said. The same could be said for the two teams in general. They
seem to wind up here every year and play each other almost
every year. "We might have wanted to win too much," Seals
said. "You've got to show up for Bob Jones."

Calm? Yeah, right
Sunday, February 22, 2009, Huntsville Times
HANCEVILLE - There were five minutes to play Saturday as
Kellie Cook high-stepped her way down the basketball court
at Wallace State's Tom Drake Coliseum as if she were
firewalking her way to Birmingham. The Bob Jones High senior had just scored her second basket
against Sparkman in a game where field goals were rarer than
a long-lasting Hollywood marriage. It gave the Lady Patriots
a six-point lead in an eventual 38-26 victory in the Class
6A Northwest Regional final. Quickly realizing there was a lot of ballgame left, Cook
flapped her arms downward and delivered a message to her
teammates. "Stay calm," she pleaded. "Stay calm." But 10 seconds later, there she was chest-bumping teammate
Mekena Randall after the latter took a charge. Randall shot
Cook a look that said "You're telling us to stay
calm?" "I used to be so intense I'd get tight," Cook
said. "Now, I really like to have fun with the
game." For the four Madison County teams that advanced Saturday to
the state tournament at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic
Center, a good time was had by all.
Consider ...
The Bob Jones boys, who followed their female counterparts
on the court. Relying heavily on the youthful legs but
veteran poise of freshman post Reggie Ragland (15 points)
and sophomore wing Levi Randolph (11 points, five rebounds,
four steals), the Patriots beat Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 50-37
and avoided the ignominious prospect of having to face the
girls on Monday morning without a ticket to the Final 48. "They were all telling us 'You have to win, you
have to win,' " Randolph said. "We sure
didn't want them to make us look bad." Instead, they made their coach look pretty good. Danny Petty
has now led three different teams - Johnson and Madison
Academy being the other two - to the state tournament. "I'm tickled to death for these guys," Petty
said. "Now they're going to get an experience that
will stay for them the rest of their lives." ... (More from the Huntsville Times)

Another Dozen for the Lady Patriots!
Birmingham News
Paul Beaudry, February 21, 2009 12:27 p.m.

As
expected, both No. 1 Sparkman and No. 2 Bob Jones came out tight in
their AHSAA Class 6A Northwest Regional final at Wallace
State-Hanceville. Bob Jones adapted. Sparkman didn't. That allowed the Patriots a chance to defend their state title with a 38-26 win against their Huntsville-area rival on Saturday. "No
doubt both teams were tight," said Bob Jones coach Tim Miller, whose
team was tied at 17-all at half with the Senators. "Jala Harris and
Sametria Gideon were in everyone's ear at halftime telling them to
settle down. I didn't have to say too much." Actions followed
those words in the second half -- as Bob Jones' defense, specifically
Gideon -- held Sparkman standout Adrienne Webb to just two points. "I've
played her so much this season, I pretty much know what she's going to
do," said Gideon, guiding a defense that allowed just nine points in
the second half and three in the fourth quarter. "I think we were
tight early and we took ourselves out of our game," said Sparkman coach
June Seals. "We didn't settle in and run our offense. Then we started
overplaying. We didn't hit free throws (12 of 18) and didn't rebound." Regional
MVP Harris led the Patriots (31-3) with 19 points while Gideon added 11
rebounds. Chatia Kelsey had 12 points to lead Sparkman (31-2) with
Danielle Vaughn adding six assists. Sparkman won the first two meetings this year by 45-40 margin, but Bob Jones won the the area final, 40-28. "It's
like the first team to hit 40 or near 40 when we play, wins," said
Miller. "We've lost to them three times in the last seven meetings and
it's been the same exact score."

Sparkman, Bob Jones won't require any pep talks

Saturday, February 21, 2009, By MIKE EASTERLING
Times Sports Staff mike.easterling@htimes.com

HANCEVILLE - Kellie Cook didn't mind putting a little
extra pressure on teammate Sametria Gideon earlier this week
as they stood side-by-side doing interviews at the Northwest
Regional. With many little battles within the big one set to play out
when the Lady Patriots meet Sparkman in a clash of state
high school powerhouses, Cook said "Metria's
defense on Webb'' could be the game's key
clash. "She plays defense, we win the game.'' Webb is Sparkman All-State player Adrienne, an LSU signee
who made 9-of-10 shots from the field in the first half as
Sparkman dismantled Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 83-31 shortly after
Bob Jones destroyed Minor 71-39 in a pair of regional
semifinals. Gideon didn't flinch when Cook announced her
assessment. She said working through screens is vital to
defending Webb. She also said she's eager for the
matchup, yet one more in what has become one of the
state's top rivalries. "It's fun playing a rival school,'' she
said, "especially this time of year when it's all
or nothing.'' Bob Jones (30-3) is the defending state champion. Sparkman
(31-1) won the title the year before and has three crowns
since 2002. The winner plays next Thursday in the final four
in Birmingham. Today's meeting will be the sixth in seven years at
Wallace State-Hanceville between the two. In the past seven
seasons dating back to 2002, Sparkman has won the regional
four times and Bob Jones twice. One thing seems certain - the offensive explosion both teams
enjoyed in the semifinals won't be repeated. The first
one to 40 might win. At least, "That's the way
it's been,'' Bob Jones coach Tim Miller said
of his two seasons with the Lady Patriots. Sparkman won the first two meetings between the two this
season by identical scores of 45-40, 45-40. Bob Jones won
the third clash, 40-28. Last season, Sparkman won the initial meeting 45-40, then
Bob Jones reeled of victories by scores of 43-40, 54-32 and
46-38. According to Webb, a four-year varsity starter who finished
with 24 points on 10-of-12 shooting against Hillcrest,
playing Bob Jones in so many big games would grow old if it
weren't so much fun. "It just adds to it,'' she said. Webb said she's not concerned about how many points she
scores today or about her team matching the offensive
outburst it had in the semifinals. "Points don't matter as long as we
win,'' she said.
